Polio survivors reflect on pandemic as they receive COVID-19 vaccine
HOUSTON โ Memorial Hermann hospital has a special connection to polio survivors and wanted to ensure they were high on its list of patients to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The hospital first began treating polio survivors in the 1950โฒs and 1960โฒs, according to Dr. Gerard Francisco, chief medical officer at TIRR Memorial Hermann/ UTHealth. โEither because they got the polio before the vaccine was developed or when the vaccine was developed, they did not have access to it.โThe TIRR post-polio clinic now treats polio survivors, like Rhonda Young of Kingwood. In Montgomery County, Sandra Young says the doors of her place, Bokeeterโs Cocktail Bar in New Caney, will remain open in spite of any closure order. Sheโs had a long-running dispute with state regulators ever since she was first ordered to close last spring. Youngโs business actually shouldnโt be open right now. But Young is convinced she has a right to remain open regardless of what the governor says.

Hurricane Laura made landfall in Cameron, Louisiana, just 10 miles from where Young grew up. Young said most of her family lives in the area and their situation is no different. A lot (of my family members) have evacuated, which is unusual for Louisiana people, Young said. Lake Charles is feeling the effect, but as Young said, Laura pummeled Cameron Parish first. I am going to go back, and my house isnt going to be there, Young said.

Courtney Phillips led the commission for just over a year before leaving to take the top job at Louisianas health agency.
