New UIL rules now require all Texas schools to use the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) to assess heat risk before and during outdoor athletic and marching band practices. The WBGT provides a more accurate measure of dangerous conditions than the traditional heat index by factoring in sunlight, wind, and other variables. Depending on the WBGT reading, schools must implement restrictions such as more water breaks, shorter practices, or schedule changes to reduce heat-related risks. These measures aim to protect students from heat illness while allowing them to continue preparing for their sports and activities.
