Emmy winners highlight push for social justice

(The Television Academy and ABC Entertainment via AP)LOS ANGELES – Regina King and Uzo Aduba used the come-as-you-are fashion edict for Sunday's virtual Emmy Awards to highlight the national struggle for social justice. Both Black actresses wore T-shirts featuring Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old EMT from Louisville, Kentucky, who was shot and killed by police in March. Aduba, sitting behind a table at home, wore a black T-shirt with Taylor's name in gold. Aduba wanted to give a boost to the demands for social justice that have swept the nation during the coronavirus pandemic this year. He took the stage at Staples Center wearing a black T-shirt with white letters BLM for Black Lives Matter and a white raised fist.

Voting and Black Lives Matter take center stage at Emmys

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards took place Sunday night with many presenters and award winners stressing the importance of voting and expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Get Breaking News Delivered to Your Inbox"Watchmen" star Regina King also touched on voting in her acceptance speech for lead actress in a limited series. Actress Uzo Aduba, who won the award for best actress in a limited series, also wore a Breonna Taylor shirt. Actor Anthony Anderson led Kimmel in a chant of "Black Lives Matter" before presenting the award for best limited series. "I'm still rooting for everybody Black because Black stories, Black performances and Black lives matter," Anderson said.

Portman group will bring NWSL to Los Angeles in 2022

Actress Natalie Portman and venture capitalist Kara Nortman lead a group that will bring an expansion National Women's Soccer League team to the Los Angeles area in 2022. Then she and Nortman met Becca Roux, the executive director of the U.S. Women's National Team Players Association. The women also reached out to a local supporters group that has been campaigning to bring a team to Los Angeles. The group is partnering with the LA84 Foundation, a nonprofit formed after the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics that promotes youth sports. The official name of the Los Angeles club, and where it will play, are expected to be announced later this year.

Uzo Aduba Leads a Movement in 'Miss Virginia' Trailer (Exclusive)

Orange Is the New Black star Uzo Aduba goes to Washington in the upcoming drama Miss Virginia -- and ET is exclusively debuting the trailer. Based on a true story, Miss Virginia centers on single mother Virginia Walden (Aduba) and her 15-year-old son James (This Is Us' Niles Fitch). "My son can't wait," Virginia objects in the preview. So Virginia travels to D.C., where she attempts to change the system and create opportunities for low income students to attend private schools. Directed by R.J. Daniel Hanna from a script by Erin O'Connor, Miss Virginia also stars Vanessa Williams, Aunjanue Ellis (When They See Us) and Adina Porter.
