The Texas Senate passed Senate Bill 2010, authored by Sen. Paul Bettencourt, to prevent local governments from using public funds for universal basic income programs like Harris County's "Uplift Harris."

Harris County is moving forward with an initiative that provides financial aid to Houstonians that need it most.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is not letting up on efforts to stop the controversial Uplift Harris program.

On Friday, the Texas Supreme Court ruled against Harris County from sending financial assistance to in-need families under a new income pilot program after a political match between the Texas Attorney General.

The Texas Supreme Court issued an emergency stay blocking Harris County’s guaranteed income program from taking effect and releasing funds. One recipient shared how he was hoping to secure housing with the payment.

“Harris County officials cannot continue to abuse their power and the people’s money to score political points, and we will fight every step of the way to hold them accountable," Paxton said in a press statement.

The first of 18 monthly payments are supposed to go out this Wednesday. And despite a judge siding with Harris County, Paxton has filed an appeal. Leading County Judge Lina Hidalgo to wonder when and if they can even give recipients the money.

The program is now open, but they're issuing a notice.
