New round of Trump clemency benefits Manafort, other allies

FILE - In this Thursday, June 27, 2019 file photo, Paul Manafort arrives in court in New York. President Trump's former campaign manager is to be arraigned on state mortgage fraud charges. Manafort, who led Trump's campaign during a pivotal period in 2016 before being ousted over his ties to Ukraine, was among the first people charged as part of Mueller’s investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Though the charges against Manafort did not concern the central thrust of Mueller's mandate — whether the Trump campaign and Russia colluded to tip the election — he was nonetheless a pivotal figure in the investigation. Trump and the elder Kushner knew each other from real estate circles and their children were married in 2009.

A look at the 29 people Trump pardoned or gave commutations

Trump commuted his sentence in July just days before he was scheduled to report to federal prison. The president commuted her sentence; the White House said the commutation was supported by several former U.S. attorneys general. A White House news release praised the men as “model prisoners,” who had earned support and praise from other inmates. She was in the White House when Trump signed the overhaul measure, known as the First Step Act, into law. Black was a co-defendant in the case and was also convicted; Trump previously pardoned him.

The Pentagon has appointed two close political allies of President Donald Trump to a defense advisory board, continuing a purge of the Defense Department in the waning weeks of the Trump administration. The acting secretary of defense, Christopher Miller, said in a written statement Friday that nine members of the Defense Business Board had been replaced with the appointment of 11 new members. (AP Photo/John Minchillo)WASHINGTON – The Pentagon has appointed two close allies of President Donald Trump, Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie, to a defense advisory board, continuing a post-election purge in the final weeks of the administration. The Miller statement initially said the nine individuals removed from the board had been serving in ”expired positions," implying they were overdue to leave. But later the Pentagon amended the statement to say some board members had been “terminated.” It gave no reason for the firings.

Lewandowski was recently in Philadelphia, where the Trump campaign is mounting legal challenges to election officials' vote-counting procedures. On Wednesday, it was revealed that two more people who attended the White House gathering — White House political director Brian Jack and former Trump aide Healy Baumgardner — also tested positive.

Rudy Giuliani says Trump will not concede election

Rudy Giuliani said at a press conference shortly after Joe Biden was projected to become the 46th president of the United States that President Trump will not concede the election. "Obviously he's not going to concede when at least 600,000 ballots are in question," Giuliani said in Philadelphia on Saturday. "Seems to me somebody from the Democratic National Committee sent out a note that said don't let the Republicans look at those mail-in ballots," Giuliani claimed, again without offering any evidence. He claimed that Biden gaining a lead in the state vote count after Election Day is proof of corruption. Asked about the call for President-elect Biden by major news networks, Giuliani mocked the media for harboring "hateful biases" toward President Trump.

Biden supporters blasted Beyoncé to drown out Trump officials' speech at rally in Philadelphia

There's truly a Beyoncé song for every moment, even when you're at a protest. Supporters of Joe Biden weren't interested in hearing the news, and instead opted to blast Beyoncé's "Party" to drown out the opposing side's conversation, as reported by BuzzFeed's breaking news reporters Amber Jamieson and Julia Reinstein. (Politics aside, it's definitely a good song choice, no matter what mood you're in). "This is the stuff that fuels our fire, and that's the reason why we play it," O'Rourke said, as reported by BuzzFeed. As of Friday morning, Biden was leading in both Pennsylvania and Georgia.

EXPLAINER: Why AP hasn't called Pennsylvania

WHY AP HASN’T CALLED PENNSYLVANIA:A close margin and a large number of outstanding votes are what’s making the Pennsylvania contest between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden too early to call. State law dictates that a recount must be held if the margin between the two candidates is less than 0.5%. The Pennsylvania secretary of state’s website said Friday that there were about 89,000 more mail ballots to count. It’s not like, ‘Oh, it’s close,’” Trump said during an appearance at the White House. One reason the race tightened: Under state law, elections officials are not allowed to process mail-in ballots until Election Day.

Trump campaign held press conference in Philadelphia

The Trump campaign hosted a press conference in Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon, with Eric Trump, Trump 2020 senior advisor Lara Trump, Rudy Giuliani, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, and campaign senior advisor Corey Lewandowski. During the press conference, Eric Trump accused Democrats of trying to cheat in Pennsylvania, without evidence, a claim that was echoed by Giuliani. Mr. Trump visited Pennsylvania 13 times, while Biden made 16 trips, and both were campaigning in the state on the eve of the election. Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar said earlier that the state had counted nearly 50% of its mail-in ballots so far. Upwards of 3 million mail-in absentee ballots were cast in the Keystone State — a 10-fold increase over previous elections, according to Boockvar.

White House will hire two high-profile aides to run impeachment messaging

As the House impeachment inquiry enters a new, public phase, the White House communications office is expected to add two longtime Trump allies to its staff, where they will be tasked with running a proactive impeachment messaging operation, CNBC confirmed Tuesday. Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney is "very pleased" with the Bondi and Sayegh hires, a senior administration official told CNBC. The hiring of Bondi and Sayegh, both high-profile political veterans, represents a new, more offensive posture from the White House, which has struggled to devise a cohesive strategy in response to the growing House impeachment inquiry. "Here's the thing: I don't have teams," Trump told reporters at the White House recently. Within the White House, Sayegh is considered an ally of Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor.
