Famed University of Texas mascot, BEVO XIV, dies
AUSTIN, Texas – University of Texas mascot BEVO XIV, recently diagnosed with Bovine Leukemia Virus, peacefully died in his sleep Friday, according to University of Texas officials. The UT website says following a preliminary diagnosis of the illness last week, BEVO XIV had been resting at his ranch, where he died in the company of his best longhorn friend Spike and John T. and Betty Baker, the owners and caretakers of both BEVO XIV and his predecessor, BEVO XIII. BEVO XIV began his tenure at the age of two in 2004, and was on the sidelines for many historic moments. In addition to his prominent position on the sidelines at Texas Football games, BEVO XIV made multiple appearances at special events, including the second inauguration of President George W. Bush. The necessary funds to support the care and transport of BEVO are provided by the Silver Spurs BEVO Endowment.
UT plays on despite controversy
SAN ANTONIO – A sea of burnt orange surrounded San Antonio's Alamodome Saturday, despite a growing controversy surrounding two of its players. Legions of Longhorn fans gathered to greet at the UT season finale. "It was shocking when I heard that yesterday," said UT fan Jay Vigil. Another UT fan, Lonnie Carter, said he thinks the controversy won't affect team play. "I think the team can put that aside and be able to play and represent today," said Carter.
Texas Longhorns Set Spring Football Schedule
HOUSTON – The Texas Longhorns Spring Football Season is slated to kickoff on Thursday, February 23 and will wrap up with the 2012 Texas Football Spring Jamboree and annual Orange/White game on Sunday, April 1. In between, two Longhorns workouts will be open to the public on Friday, March 3 and Saturday March 4. Both of those practices will start at 4pm and take place in Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Orange-White game will kickoff at 2pm in Austin.
