In 'Ma Rainey,' channeling the blues of August Wilson
Following โFencesโ and โMa Rainey,โ he intends to continue adapting Wilsonโs famed American Century Cycle, a 10-play series spanning each decade of the 20th century. All of Wilson's plays hum with the sorrowful beauty of the blues but โMa Rainey" is soaked through. On a sweaty, summer day, a band has gathered at a white-owned recording studio to cut a new record with Ma Rainey (Davis), the pioneering โMother of the Blues,โ and an unapologetically liberated woman from the South. Itโs Cutler and Slow Drag and Ma Rainey talking," says Wolfe. For Davis, Ma isn't a character she wants to let go of, or stop admiring.
'Tenet' to open internationally first, in US a week later

Warner Bros. on Monday said Tenet will arrive in more than 70 countries on Wednesday, Aug. 26, including Japan, Russia, much of Europe, Australia and Canada. The $200 million thriller will open in the U.S. a week later on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Warner Bros. will also deliberately spread out its opening weekend, debuting the film mid-week to space out eager moviegoers.

Zendaya shared the first look at a mysterious new project on Wednesday, posting a photo from her upcoming film, Malcolm & Marie. The actress shared the shot on Instagram, a black and white photo of her and co-star John David Washington as the intimate titular couple. Deadline's report also includes an extensive rundown of how the production -- which was funded by Zendaya, Washington, Levinson, and producer Kevin Turin -- pulled off their two-week shoot in compliance with COVID-19 safety protocols. The production came together after Zendaya and Levinson had to shut down production on season 2 of Euphoria back in March. Zendaya, Yalitza Aparicio, Constance Wu and More Stars Invited to Join the Academy
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is embracing and championing diversity in a bigger way than ever before. The organization sent out a slew of invitations to potential voting members, including Zendaya, Awkwafina, Constance Wu, and John David Washington, to name a few. Notably, Booksmart director Olivia Wilde, as well as the film's stars, Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein, were invited as well. "The Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travelers in the motion picture arts and sciences," Academy President David Rubin said in a statement released Wednesday. The Academy announced last month that the 93rd Academy Awards will be postponed until April 25 -- two months later than originally planned -- due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Awkwafina, Zendaya among 819 invited to join film academy
Cynthia Erivo, John David Washington, Eva Longoria, Zendaya and Awkwafina are among the 819 people who have been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. If they accept, which most do, those in the new class will have voting privileges at this years Oscars. A handful of actors from this years best picture winner Parasite, including Jang Hye-Jin, Jo Yeo-Jeong, Park So-Dam and Lee Jung-Eun, were also invited to join. The Academy said that 49% of the new invitees are international and represent some 68 countries. It has since surpassed those goals and continues to infuse membership classes with both women and people from underrepresented communities.
