With October retail sales missing expectations and a somewhat unpredictable holiday season around the corner, traders are on the lookout for anything that might indicate how the end-of-year spending story might play out for retailers. Dollar Tree, however, looked to be in a more precarious position, he said.

cnbc.comDiscount retailers to report earnings, and chart analyst is watching two stocks
Discount retailers are rounding out the earnings season. Costco, Dollar General and Dollar Tree are each scheduled to report quarterly results on Thursday three closely watched stocks as the coronavirus pandemic takes a toll on the economy. On Dollar Tree, Johnson said the stock appears to have reversed a monthslong downtrend and is on its way back to its 50-day moving average at about $93. "Switching gears and looking at Dollar General, when I look at this particular stock it's entered what I call an HLTR which is a high-level trading range, and that's more or less just a consolidation pattern," said Johnson. "If we see a topside breakout of that consolidation range around $185, it suggests to me that we're starting a whole other leg higher, and we clearly are buying the shares at that point in time."

Dollar Tree CEO Gary Philbin said Wednesday the retailer's supply chains have "been stressed" from a spike in coronavirus-related demand, but he sought to reassure customers that more products are on their way. Employees at Dollar Tree's 24 distribution centers in the country have been working seven days a week to send shipments to stores, Philbin said. Dollar Tree, which also owns Family Dollar, has about 15,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada. Philbin also said Dollar Tree is looking to hire around 25,000 employees across its stores and distribution centers. Shares of Chesapeake, Virginia-based Dollar Tree were slightly higher Wednesday, even as the broader market was down around 3%.

cnbc.comTop analyst Matthew Boss: Dollar stores and discount retailers may emerge stronger after coronavirus
Dollar General and Dollar Tree are among the retailers that could benefit after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, JPMorgan analyst Matthew Boss said Thursday. "Discounters, dollar stores, off-pricers and strong global brands I actually think could emerge stronger from this, take market share, use their size and scale," Boss said on CNBC's "Halftime Report." On the contrary, Boss said, the coronavirus crisis and its resulting economic shock could represent more bad news for department stores and mall-based specialty stores. In addition to Dollar General and Dollar Tree, Boss said Five Below and Ollie's are well positioned to continue appealing to consumers and have "debt-free balance sheets." Off-price retailers Burlington, TJ Maxx owner TJX and Ross Stores also will remain attractive as consumers seek value, Boss argued.

cnbc.comBlack Friday may not save retail, but some e-commerce plays are buys
The SPDR S&P Retail ETF, also known by its ticker, XRT, is up less than 10% for 2019 coming in just above the modest 4% year-to-date gain for energy, the worst-performing sector in the S&P 500. Black Friday also remains a question mark for many physical retailers struggling to attract shoppers to their stores. But investors could still benefit from parts of the retail space via exchange-traded fund strategies, Dave Nadig, managing director of ETF.com, tells CNBC's "ETF Edge." Other ETFs that capitalize on the online shopping boom include ProShares' Online Retail ETF (ONLN), Amplify's Online Retail ETF (IBUY), the Global X E-commerce ETF (EBIZ) and the Emerging Markets Internet & Ecommerce ETF (EMQQ). At the same time, some domestically focused retail stocks are "priced for perfection," said Seymour, who appears regularly on CNBC's "Fast Money."
cnbc.comFDA warns Dollar Tree about selling 'potentially unsafe drugs'
(CNN) - The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning letter to Dollar Tree for receiving over-the-counter drugs produced by foreign manufacturers that have been found to be adulterated, including acne treatment pads and Assured brand drugs. The letter outlines "multiple violations" of manufacturing practices at those contract manufacturers used to produce Dollar Tree's Assured Brand over-the-counter drugs as well as other drug products sold at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores. Now, in its warning letter to Dollar Tree, the FDA is requesting that the company implement a system to ensure that it does not import adulterated drugs. "In this case, Dollar Tree has the ultimate responsibility to ensure that it does not sell potentially unsafe drugs and other FDA-regulated products to Americans," he said. In response, the Dollar Tree company, which operates stores under the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar brands, said that it is cooperating with the FDA and plans to meet with the agency.
Cramer Remix: The stocks worth owning once the coast is clear
The easing of economic activity will give a boost to the companies of Dollar Tree and Darden Restaurants, but investors should be patient before investing in their stocks here, CNBC's Jim Cramer said Monday. Darden Restaurants, the parent of Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze among other eateries, will also catch windfall from trade tensions and the slowing economy. "You have to worry that they could be dragged down by the gravitational pull of the entire market," Cramer said. "I could see Darden falling to 17-times earnings, Dollar Tree going to 15-times earnings if the averages keep getting hammered based on these overblown fears of a recession." "So you got to wait until the dust settles before committing any new money," he said.

cnbc.comDollar stores face growing scrutiny
Yet a wave of cities and towns have passed laws curbing the expansion of Dollar General and Dollar Tree, which bought Family Dollar in 2015. Advocates of tighter controls on dollar stores say the big chains intentionally cluster multiple stores in low-income areas. Dollar General and its dollar store rivals mostly sell snacks, drinks, canned foods and vegetables, household supplies and personal care products at rock-bottom prices. Dollar stores can open quickly in new areas because they are small and have lower operating costs than grocery stores. Family-owned grocery stores operate at razor-thin profit margins and dollar stores can pressure them with lower prices, experts say.
