A northwest Harris County community that has spent years fighting to close a nearby landfill could be one step closer to seeing it shut down.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the company USA Waste of Texas Landfills, Inc. has withdrawn a permit request to expand the Hawthorn Park Landfill.

Residents in northwest Houston say the idea of expanding a landfill near their homes is a “disastrous idea.”

Some neighbors are raising concerns about a proposal to expand a landfill near Houston’s Carverdale area.
