KATY, Texas – The Katy Tigers softball team has been lethal in the batter’s box, hitting more than 60 home runs this season, winning their last 18 straight games, and getting to the state semifinal round of the playoffs this weekend.
Their matchup is against Pharr-San Juan-Alamo, a team that’s only lost one game this season, but the Tigers are focused on the task at hand and not letting the chance for a state championship run distract them from this weekend.
The middle of their lineup, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th hitters, are nicknamed “Death Valley” because their ability to get runs on the board is inevitable.
“You can try to walk, EK Smith (Ella Kate Smith) but then you have to pitch to Maddie Smith, you can try to walk Maddie but then you have to pitch to Evie (Willemssen), and then if not Evie, Navaeh (Phillips), so it’s like we’ve got this core middle of this lineup that can change the game with one swing,” said Katy Head Coach Meghan VanEtta.
The first game of the Tigers’ three-game series with PJSA is on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Corpus Christi at the Cabaniss Athletic Complex.
