HOUSTON – The Texans are hosting former Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson for a free agency visit, per a league source.

Emerson, 26, tore his Achilles last year during training camp, but is making a sound recovery.

During the NFL owners meeting, Browns general manager Andrew Berry discussed how Emerson wants to be a starting outside corner and that doesn’t fit their alignment with Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell installed as their starters.

“Selfishly, would love to have him back,” Berry said. “I think we’re also realistic that with M.J. and the injury that he’s coming off of, he’s also got to be in a position where he has maybe a strong opportunity to compete for a starting spot. That’s probably a little bit harder with how we’re configured with Denzel and Tyson. But, certainly, if that changes, we’d love to have him back.”

A former third-round draft pick from Mississippi State, Emerson played under a four-year, $5.471 million rookie contract that expired

Two seasons ago, Emerson recorded 80 tackles, three tackles for losses, one forced fumble and five passes defensed in 15 starts.

Emerson has four career interceptions, all during the 2023 season when he started 12 games

If the Texans add Emerson, he could compete for the third corner role with Jaylin Smith. Smith is expected back for training camp after spending the majority of his rookie season on injured reserve with a torn meniscus that required surgery.
