‘Are they playing a school called Biblical Studies,’ one commentator said. ‘I don’t think God is on their side.’

GRAMBLING, La. – The women’s basketball team at Houston’s College of Biblical Studies is pulling themselves up by the bootstrap after suffering a major, historic loss against Grambling State University on Tuesday.

Grambling walked off the hardwood with a whopping 159 points while our hometown team from the College of Biblical Studies was only able to score 18 shots.

Grambling State got baskets early, often, and in between from everybody to set an NCAA Division I record for margin of victory in men’s or women’s basketball with the blowout.

As of Thursday afternoon, the game had more than 6,800 views on YouTube. Fans, sports enthusiasts, and others took to X, formerly known as Twitter, posting videos and sharing their commentary on the situation.

In a video, one commentator said “Are they playing a school called Biblical Studies?” Another responded, “Did they think about praying?” To which he responds, “Yeah, I don’t think God is on their side.”

In the second quarter alone, the score had already gotten to 58 to 4, Grambling.

Some folks on social media began to question if Grambling’s coach Courtney Simmons should have bowed out early when she saw the score could only work in her team’s favor or if she exuded poor sportsmanship by keeping the game going.

@Coach_Coutland on X (Twitter) said, “That Grambling State game was rough, pressing while up 100pts is crazy! Happens in HS too. “Keep competing” is probably what the losing side Coach told his/her players I guess.”

@Bogeyfromhell said, “Total embarrassment for Grambling State, even more so that they don’t realize it.”

Another X user, @ramanjr, wrote, “Nothing to be proud of,” while @william_laketv added that, “This feels kinda sacrilegious.”

On Grambling’s women’s basketball website, the team wrote, “In a decisive display of dominance, Grambling asserted themselves by securing an impressive victory against The College of Biblical Studies, ending with a commanding score of 159-18 in their latest matchup.”

Simmons, who is in her first year as a Grambling coach, said Wednesday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that her team’s goal was playing its best basketball rather than running up the score against the startup program comprised of freshmen. The former Louisville, Tulane and Trinity Valley player noted in a phone interview Wednesday night with The Associated Press that none of her starters played more than 18 minutes and that her eight reserves combined for 92 points in brief rotations.

“We preach championship talk and our goal is to score 15 points every five minutes,” said Simmons, attributing her philosophy to 10 years as a Troy assistant and recruiting coordinator under Chanda Rigby, whose squad ranked third nationally in scoring at 83.3 points per game.

“If we score 15 points every five minutes it means you score 120 points. So, that’s our goal every game. ... For people who didn’t see the game and don’t take the time to look at the box score, I think is hard for them to understand like, ‘Oh my God, how could they run the score up on them like that?’ But honestly, we weren’t trying to. That’s why the players on the other team weren’t upset and their coaches weren’t upset.”

CBS President Dr. William Blocker said in a statement to the AP that the school has “a long way to go,” but is excited for the new journey. Blocker added, “We also acknowledge the amazing talent at Grambling. What a historic evening for their team!”

But, Texas isn’t letting Grambling off the hook that easily. The Lady Tigers are expected to face the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers on Jan. 6.
