HOUSTON – After polishing off an undefeated season in district play, a first for any Cy Fair ISD team, the Cy Falls Golden Eagles, noted that was not their main goal this season.
Their goal was to earn the school's first-ever trip to the state tournament.
Saturday in front of their home fans at the Berry Center, they accomplished that, too, with a hard-fought 73-63 win over Fort Bend Bush in the 6A region III final.
"It's a great feeling," Cy Falls coach RIchard Flores said.
"It's even better when you look up into the stands and you see green and gold up there. It's a great moment for Cypress Falls high school."
"We're brothers and we come through in big moments like tonight," guard Andrew Nguyen said.
They played from in front throughout the game after establishing a 21-8 first quarter lead, but the game stayed within striking distance throughout the contest for Bush.
Cy Falls led just 37-31 as the halftime buzzer was about to sound, but that's when Nguyen squared up and launched a shot from just inside the halfcourt stripe.
It caught nothing but nylon and the Golden Eagles never looked back.
'We've done a lot of things that have been special, it started with going undefeated in district, that' never been done," Flores said.
"Getting to the regional tournament, that's never been done. And now, going to state, that of course has never been done for Cypress Falls."
Nguyen led the way with 21 points. Trajan Wesley added 16 points despite being plagued by foul trouble much of the night. Nigel Hawkins, who scored the Golden Eagles first seven points, finished with 14.
