Lake Jackson officer shoots, kills 68-year-old man

Police say man pointed semi-automatic handgun at officers

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – The Lake Jackson Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting after a 68-year-old man was killed inside his home early Wednesday morning.

Officers responded to a call about shots fired at Robert Edwards' home in the 500 block of Sycamore Street just after midnight.

"Prior to our arrival he had pointed the weapon at a roommate inside the house," said Chief Rick Park of the Lake Jackson Police Department.

Officers went inside the house and tried to speak with Edwards through his bedroom door. When he didn't respond, they went inside.

"When the door was opened by officers, the suspect raised a handgun in the officers' direction and disregarded repeated officer commands to drop the weapon," said Park.

Three officers fired their weapons, hitting and killing Edwards.

Omari Armstrong has lived next door to Edwards for almost her entire life.

"A beautiful life was taken from us; it is not going to be the same on Sycamore," she said.

She said Edwards was like a grandfather to her. "(He was) very friendly. He loved his neighbors, always came around to talk to us. We would make him dinner some nights," said Armstrong.

Police have not released the name of the officers involved in this shooting.

The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office is also investigating.
