Henry Martinez named new Precinct 6 constable to replace Victor Trevino

HOUSTON – A special commissioners court meeting was held Monday morning to name a new Harris County constable.

Lt. Henry Martinez will replace the outgoing Victor Trevino as the new Harris County Precinct 6 constable.

Trevino was sentenced to 10 years probation earlier this month after pleading guilty to stealing money from his own charity. He was forced to immediately resign.

Martinez was sworn in Monday morning and will serve the final two years of Trevino's term.

"I don't really know what I am walking into. That's going to be a day-to-day function for me. Find out, see where the department is at now and let everyone know where we want to go from there," said Martinez.

His appointment is not without controversy. Some say Precinct 2 Commissioner Jack Morman should have gotten more input.

"Why did you do this? You completely ignored us. Acted like we don't even exist. Let me tell you, you better start looking yourself another job. We're not going to tolerate that from you guys," said community activist W.R. Morris.

"We had a lot of law enforcement people giving us a lot of good advice to try and get the best person as well as the community at large," said Morman.

He said he did get the community's input before recommending the 30-year law enforcement veteran and life-long resident of Precinct 6.  Sheriff Adrian Garcia said Martinez is a good choice.

"He is a long-time resident of the community and a product of HISD. A hard worker, dedicated, ethical person. And so, I am so proud that he has gained the confidence of commissioners to have this opportunity. I know he'll do a fantastic job," Garcia said.

Martinez said he will spend time on the streets learning more about what is needed. He says he will not run for the position in two years.

Trevino had served as constable for more than 30 years.
