Teachers receive free active-shooter training seminar in Cypress

CYPRESS, Texas – The owner of Silverback Self Defense in Cypress offered a free active shooter training seminar to teachers Sunday.

About 10 teachers, ranging from pre-kindergarten to college-level, we’re in attendance at the Barker Cypress Road studio.

Robert Webre said in light of the deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, he wanted to make sure teachers were equipped with skills that could potentially save their lives and those of their students. The seminar was designed to help empower teachers to become first responders during an active shooting.

“We’ve been told that the average time, response time is about 12 and a half to 15 minutes but the average shooting lasts less than that,” Webre said.

Webre, who has taught martial arts for 17 years, said teachers should remember three things: escape, evade and engage. He suggested school staff only engage if necessary. He demonstrated how a group of two people could take down an armed person in less than 10 seconds while they wait for police and first responders to arrive.

Webre said he will continue to offer free active-shooter training to teachers as long as educators are willing to learn.
