Sir Romeo celebrates 5th birthday in hospital months after being struck by stray bullet

HOUSTON – There was a big birthday celebration today at Texas Children's Hospital for a little boy who was critically wounded by a stray bullet in Sunnyside in May.

Sir Romeo Milam turned 5 and his family threw him a party Monday at the hospital, where he is still recovering more than five months later.

"Romeo, he's a fighter. At the end of the day, he's going to make it. He's going to be back to his normal self," his mother Cocoa Milam said.

On May 15, 2018, Houston police said, two groups of people began shooting at each other outside the Kings Row Apartments in the 4100 block of Barberry Drive.

Sir Romeo was inside an apartment at the complex watching television with his grandmother when he was struck by a stray bullet.

Houston police arrived at the scene and officers rushed the little boy to Texas Children's Hospital in a police cruiser.

On Monday, those officers attended his party.

After multiple surgeries and a few complications, Sir Romeo is once again walking on his own.

"It's amazing thinking back to the first night he got here to how far he's come," said Michael White, a physicians assistant on Sir Romeo's medical team.

The day of the shooting, officers put him in a police cruiser to rush him to a waiting ambulance.

"It was just very important to get him to safety and to help," said Sergeant Corey Harrington.

Sergeant Corey Harrington and Officer Evan Schrock were happy to celebrate with Sir Romeo and see him in action.

"He's always been asleep when i try to see him, so it's really great to see him up," Schrock said.

No one has been arrested in connection with Sir Romeo's shooting.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the people or person responsible. You can leave anonymous tips at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
