Woman killed by estranged husband while running from him, deputies say

HOUSTON – A woman was shot and killed by her estranged husband Monday as she tried to run from him, according to deputies.

The shooting was reported about 6 a.m. on Greencanyon Drive near Greensbrook Garden Drive.

Harris County Senior Deputy Thomas Gilliand said a neighbor called authorities after hearing a commotion outside between the 61-year-old woman and her 53-year-old estranged husband. He said that the woman tried to run from the man, who shot her. She died at the scene, he said.

Gilliand said the man jumped into a black Toyota Tundra pickup and fled the scene. Deputies are searching for the man. He said deputies are not ready to release his identity, but they are working through back channels to get the man to turn himself in to authorities.

The woman and the man had been separated for a while and the couple was in the process of a divorce, Gilliand said.

Gilliand said the woman’s son was home at the time of the shooting, but did not witness it.

Deputies said they are still trying to determine whether the shooting is related to another shooting reported about two hours later about five miles away on Kindred Street.
