HOUSTON – Some homeowners are saving up to $700 a year with do-it-yourself security systems.
According to Consumer Reports, low-priced home security cameras can help catch burglars in the act. The Drop-Cam Pro runs $199 and is a helpful entry-level device for smaller homes and apartments. It can stand up on its own or be mounted to the wall, and streams HD video to phones, tablets or computers. It can either record when it senses motion or roll all the time.
For $339, Consumer Reports said The Piper Classic with The Z-Wave Pack is the best overall home monitoring system. Combined, it includes an HD camera, motion detector and an alarm. Plus, shoppers can choose from three of five accessories; a door or window sensor, a smart switch, dimmer or range extender. It can also sound an alarm, turn lights on or off, or contact the owner if it senses movement or a loud noise.
There's also the iSmart Alarm Premium package which costs $349. Consumer Reports said the package is closer to a traditional home security system. It includes an ear-splitting siren, a low-res camera, motion sensor, sensors for two doors or windows, remotes to swivel the cameras and a two-way microphone to communicate with someone in the home.
There are some downsides. All the do-it-yourself systems require WiFi and lack the monitoring component, so it leaves it up to the owner to contact the police. Something else to keep in mind. Most insurance companies will only give a homeowner's insurance discount for a monitored alarm service.
