Road rage shooting leaves 1 teen dead, 1 injured, sheriff says

HOUSTON – An 18-year-old man is dead and a 17-year-old is in the hospital after what police are calling a road-rage incident in southwest Houston.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the conflict started Friday around 12:30 p.m. when a car with three teens left a gas station near Beckford Drive and Lima Drive.

Gonzalez said words were exchanged between the teens and a 39-year-old driver of an Audi SUV. Authorities said the 18-year-old front passenger then pointed a gun at the man in the Audi.

Gonzalez said the Audi driver, who is a concealed handgun owner, fired shots at the car that the teens were in, hitting both passengers. A 15-year-old girl was driving the car, officials said.

The teens' car stopped in a nearby neighborhood, in the 13000 block of Dawn Hollow Lane, according to Gonzalez.

Gonzalez said the driver of the Audi had his 88-year-old mother in the car with him at the time of the incident.

Both parties involved are being cooperative in the investigation and both called authorities simultaneously, officials said.

"Sometimes these type of incidents occur," Gonzalez said, "Everybody needs to keep their calm."

Both guns have been recovered and the investigation is ongoing.
