NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – New Braunfels police have a new vehicle that looks more like a race car, and will be used to reach out to the community.

The department was awarded a 2007 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 following a conviction linked to a methamphetamine raid.

In June 2011, NBPD teamed up with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to break up a drug trafficking cell linked to La Familia Michoacana, a gang known for smuggling meth and beheading enemies, including police and soldiers.

Police said the cell moved nearly 25 pounds of meth per month in the San Antonio area.

As part of the raid, authorities seized the Corvette, as well as drugs, weapons, crash and jewelry valued at $1 million.

Police used seized funds to wrap the vehicle, add lights and maintain the engine.

NBPD said the Corvette will not be used as a patrol car, but rather to appear at parades and other events reaching out to the community.

Police plan to auction the car in the future, then giving the money raised to the seizure fund. The money can then be used for more community outreach programs, as outlined by the U.S. Department of Justice.
