Mother ambushed, beaten in front of own home during carjacking

HOUSTON – A 76-year-old woman is recovering after a man beat her, pushed her down and stole her car right in her driveway Monday morning.

"I felt very furious, a lot of anger," said Paul Nguyen, the woman's son. "You see it on YouTube, online, but for it to happen to your own family member and to your mom, it's just like I couldn't bear to watch the video."

Surveillance cameras show Kim Dang getting out of her car in her driveway and walk toward her door. Moments later, she was blindsided by a man who punched her in the jaw, shoved her down and took off with her silver Honda.

"Right here," said Dang motioning to her jaw.

She has bruises on her back, jaw and forearms.

The carjacking happened in the 12900 block of Clarewood Lane in Alief. Nguyen said police found his mother's car about 10 minutes away on the 7200 Glacier Creek Lane.

"Getting the car back helps a lot, they got evidence and a few fingerprints," said Nguyen, whose mother is very happy to have her car back.

Dang said she swims every day and was on her way back from her workout when she was attacked.

Even though she has to take it easy for a week, the mother of five, who is originally from Vietnam, said she is praying for her assailant.

She said she was shaken up, but is not angry and hopes her attacker thinks about what he's done.
