Man shoots, kills himself after causing wrong-way crash, authorities say

HOUSTON – A man shot and killed himself Sunday after causing a wrong-way crash involving multiple vehicles in north Harris County, authorities say.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the man who was found dead caused the crash. Authorities say he was driving the wrong way into traffic.

After the crash, authorities say he got out of his car and talked to the other drivers to make sure they were OK. He then got back in his car and shot and killed himself, according to law enforcement.

Ryaan Boyd, who was involved in the crash, said he saw the car approach and swipe a car at a stop sign. He said he never heard any gunfire.

"We’re wondering why the guy's not coming out (of his vehicle) because it was none of our faults," Boyd said. "So we wait for maybe 25 minutes and the guy never comes out. But the lady at the stop sign says she actually saw him come out, inspect the scene and then go back into his car."

The man's identity has not been released. Investigators are now trying to determine more about the man and his motives.

"We’re trying to determine exactly what is in this man’s past -- what was happening to, as far as take his life on the scene for something as mundane as this four-car accident," HCSO Sr. Deputy Thomas Gilliland said.

Three other people in the other cars are OK. One man was sent to the Methodist Woodlands Hospital with minor injuries, but has since been released.

Roads have reopened to traffic in the area.
