HOUSTON – Women who helped shape Houston’s civic life, education system and neighborhoods will be the focus of a Women’s Equality Day program at The Heritage Society.
The Heritage Society and the League of Women Voters Houston will host the event at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 1100 Bagby Street. The program will mark the anniversary of the 19th Amendment and examine the history of women’s participation in public life.

Panelists will include Nancy Sims, a political consultant and University of Houston lecturer; Rae Bryant, founder of the Houston Suffragists Project; and Eve Myers, vice president of study and advocacy for the League of Women Voters Houston.
The discussion will cover the women’s suffrage movement, public service, education and efforts to increase representation. It also will highlight Houston women whose contributions have received less recognition.
One of those women is Charlotte Baldwin Allen, known as the “Mother of Houston.” Heritage Society Executive Director Alison Bell said Allen used her personal resources to help stabilize the city during its early years.
“Women’s Equality Day is not only a celebration of the right to vote,” Bell said. “It is a reminder of the responsibility women have carried for generations in sustaining communities, families and civic life.”
The Heritage Society also will offer a buy-one-get-one special on its Women’s History Tours on Aug. 26. The tours feature women connected to Houston’s historic homes and neighborhoods, including artists, educators, civic leaders and community builders.
