Everyday AI: Three simple prompting tips that can help you get better answers from AI

The first lesson? The quality of AI’s response often depends on the quality of your prompt.

Artificial intelligence is changing the way we live, work and learn. To help viewers make sense of the rapidly evolving technology, KPRC 2 is launching a new weekly series, Everyday AI, focused on practical ways to use AI in everyday life.

The first lesson? The quality of AI’s response often depends on the quality of your prompt.

Many people use AI the same way they use a search engine, typing in a few words and expecting the perfect answer. But experts say that’s one of the biggest mistakes users make.

Instead, the more context and direction you give AI, the more useful and personalized its responses become.

Tip 1: Give AI context

Rather than asking a broad question, provide details about your situation and what you’re trying to accomplish.

For example, instead of writing:

“Help me plan a vacation.”

Try something more specific:

“I’m a family of four with two kids under 10. We have a $3,000 budget, love beaches and only have four days off. Help me plan a vacation.”

Adding those details gives AI much more information to work with, resulting in recommendations that better fit your needs.

Tip 2: Assign AI a role

Another simple trick is to tell AI what role you want it to play before asking your question.

Examples include:

  • “Act as a travel agent.”
  • “Act as a financial advisor.”
  • “Act as a career coach.”

Giving AI a role helps shape the style and focus of its response, often leading to more useful and organized answers.

Tip 3: Ask AI to ask questions

Before AI gives you an answer, have it gather more information first.

Simply add this sentence to the end of your prompt:

“Ask me any questions you need before giving me an answer.”

Instead of making assumptions, AI can ask follow-up questions to better understand what you’re looking for, often producing a more accurate and helpful response.

Many AI tools allow users to speak their prompts instead of typing them.

Voice-to-text can make it easier to explain complex ideas, provide more detail and communicate naturally, helping AI better understand what you’re asking.

The difference between a mediocre AI response and a great one often comes down to how you ask the question.

By giving AI more context, assigning it a role and encouraging it to ask follow-up questions, you can get more personalized, accurate and useful results from the technology.
