Wilmore first made headlines after missing the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement licensing exam by just one point, delaying his dream of becoming a police officer. Instead of giving up, he returned to the police academy, continued training and recently passed the state licensing exam.

His determination also caught the attention of NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal, who helped sponsor Wilmore’s return to the academy after learning about his story.

Before pursuing a career in law enforcement, Wilmore played college basketball at Northwestern State University and Texas A&M University-Commerce before continuing his career professionally overseas.

Standing 7 feet, 3 inches tall, Wilmore is believed to be one of the tallest police officers in Texas.

The Kemah Police Department announced Monday that Wilmore will officially join the department during Tuesday’s ceremony and invited members of the public to attend and welcome the city’s newest officer.
