HOUSTON – What was once the site of a family home is now a place where neighbors gather, grow fresh food and build community.
As 2 Helps You discovered Beauty’s Community Garden in Houston’s historic Independence Heights has transformed a once-vacant lot into a space that provides fresh produce, gardening education and a sense of connection.
The garden was founded by Yvette Leno, whose family has deep roots in the neighborhood. After the family home on the property was destroyed by a fire, Leno decided to turn the page on the loss by growing it into an opportunity to serve future generations.
“I wanted to give access to fresh food and produce to our community, and I wanted to educate them to grow their own produce,” Leno said.
Unlike many community gardens, Beauty’s Community Garden doesn’t charge for plots.
“We don’t lease our plots. We don’t rent our plots. This is a community garden in the true sense of community. We garden together. We harvest together and we share our harvest,” Leno said.
Rows of vegetables and herbs have a presence in garden, including okra, Italian parsley, Cuban oregano and Japanese eggplant. For Leno, each plant represents more than a successful harvest. As we learned, it is a reminder of her grandmother, whose generosity inspired the garden’s mission.
“My grandmother fed everybody—anybody. We didn’t have to know them. And she did it right here. Right here. If they knocked on that door and said they were hungry, she fed them,” Leno said.
Today, that same spirit lives on as the garden provides fresh produce while teaching residents how to grow their own fruits and vegetables.
Keep in mind, growing food in our area comes with its own challenges.
“In Houston we can grow year-round. It doesn’t mean that it’s easy year-round,” Leno said.
Now, the garden is facing another hurdle. Its aging irrigation system needs to be replaced to keep the growing space thriving.
The team at Beauty’s Community Garden is asking for help from the community. They’re looking for donations of materials, professional services or expertise to install a new irrigation system.
