The incident happened on Sunday when the city says Officer Zachery Castenon arrived at the city police department and reported for duty. When he arrived, another Oak Ridge North police officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him.
The city said at that time, Castenon had not yet assumed any patrol-related responsibilities. The observing officer immediately notified the supervisor.
“Consistent with department policy and protocol. the supervising sergeant contacted the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and requested that an independent outside agency conduct the investigation,” the city said.
Castenon was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He is also no longer employed by the City of Oak Ridge North.
“The actions of one individual do not reflect the professionalism, integrity, and dedication demonstrated daily by the men and women of the Oak Ridge North Police Department. The city appreciates the actions taken by department personnel in promptly reporting the concern and following established procedures to ensure an independent investigation,” the city said.
