Houston – A Houston-area mother says she and her teenage daughter are still shaken up after a road rage encounter on the Katy Freeway that ended with a gunshot Tuesday night— all caught on cellphone video.

Houston police confirmed a road rage incident was reported Tuesday night near the 7600 block of the Katy Freeway.

The woman, who asked to be identified only as “Mary” out of fear for her safety, said she was driving with her 16-year-old daughter when a gray Cadillac Escalade suddenly pulled in front of them.

“So as me and my daughter were going up I-10, a car suddenly moved in front of us,” Mary said. “So I just went around and they got back in front.”

Mary said the situation escalated quickly.

“They got on the side of us and they looked in the car and I saw a woman pull a Tiffany Blue pistol, a handgun,” Mary said.

According to Mary, the Escalade continued moving aggressively around their vehicle while her daughter started recording video.

“That was when my daughter literally started recording again and got the shot,” she said.

In the cellphone video obtained by KPRC 2, a gunshot can be heard ringing out during the encounter.

“I was just in shock honestly,” Mary said. “Couldn’t really believe it. It was never that serious.”

Mary described the driver as a young Black man with long dreadlocks or twists. She said the female passenger, who she says fired the shot, was wearing a bonnet.

Despite fearing for their safety, Mary said she tried to follow the Escalade in an attempt to get the license plate number.

“I really wanted the police to get them,” she said. “It looked like they were going to kill us.”

Mary said she called 911 four times and waited more than two hours for police to arrive before eventually filing a report at Houston Police Department’s Dairy Ashford station.

The incident comes amid several other recent road rage cases reported across the Houston area.

Last month, authorities said a road rage incident involving three vehicles on Greenhouse Road near Morton Road escalated into gunfire. Deputies said one of the vehicles involved had a 9-year-old passenger inside.

In another case from this past March in northwest Harris County, cellphone video captured a man approaching a woman while holding what appeared to be a machete during a confrontation on Highway 249 near Grant Road.

Mary said this was the first time she had personally experienced road rage violence.

“I’m still pretty shaken up and I just want justice honestly,” she said.
