Suspect fatally shot after struggle with HPD sergeant during traffic stop in north Houston

HPD says the sergeant suffered minor injuries; the suspect was found nearby and later pronounced dead

HOUSTON – Houston police say a suspect is dead after a struggle with an HPD sergeant during a traffic stop early Saturday.

According to the Houston Police Department, the sergeant and the suspect were traveling southbound on Airline Drive around 1:30 a.m. when a traffic stop was initiated near the intersection with Tidwell Road.

The driver pulled into a parking lot, and investigators say the suspect got out of the vehicle before the sergeant approached. The sergeant attempted to detain the suspect, but police say the suspect resisted and a physical altercation began. During the struggle, both fell to the ground and the sergeant’s weapon discharged.

Police say the suspect then ran from the scene and was located nearby with multiple gunshot wounds. First aid was provided, but the suspect was taken to a hospital and pronounced deceased. The sergeant suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.

HPD said no weapon has been found at this time. Internal Affairs, HPD’s Special Investigative Unit, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
