Authorities say the discovery was made by a land surveyor in a wooded area along Highway 3 on Wednesday. The surveyor was unsure of whether the bones belonged to a human or an animal and contacted La Marque police for assistance.
On Thursday, authorities determined the bones do in fact belong to a human. Authorities from the La Marque Police Department, as well as Texas EquuSearch, have returned to the area to conduct a search of the area for potentially additional remains. A cadaver dog is also assisting crews with the search.
"This investigation is in the initial stages and is being worked very thoroughly. Currently, we do not have additional information regarding the identity of the remains or how long they have been at this location," the La Marque Police Department said.
