According to the Conroe Police Department, officers were called around 8:23 a.m. on March 23 to a welfare check at a Bank of America ATM located in the 1906 block of North Frazier Street.

Dispatchers then received additional reports that a security guard had possibly been shot and that a gray pickup truck was seen leaving the scene.

When officers arrived, they found a Brinks security guard suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police immediately began lifesaving measures before the victim was transported by Montgomery County Hospital District to a nearby hospital.

The victim has been identified as a 59-year-old man from Spring. Authorities say he remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.

As officers secured the scene, police began tracking stolen money boxes using 3SI tracking technology.

Tracking data led authorities to the 5000 block of North Interstate 45, where multiple agencies assisted in locating the suspect vehicle.

Officers conducted a felony traffic stop on a gray Dodge pickup truck.

Before law enforcement approached the vehicle, the driver—described as a 41-year-old man—shot himself in the head.

He was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been released as the investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities say the case is being investigated by Conroe police with assistance from the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“This is a terrible tragedy for this victim and his family,” Conroe Police Chief Jon Buckholtz said in a statement. “This morning he left his home to do his job, having no idea that a suspect would value money over his life. He was gunned down in a callous moment of greed, and we pray for his recovery.”

No additional details have been released as the investigation continues.
