Large crowds close multiple beach access points in Galveston (KPRC 2)

GALVESTON, Texas – Ahead of Spring Break and on Senior Skip Day, multiple access points to the beach in Galveston were closed Friday afternoon as police dealt with large crowds of young people and heavy traffic.

Multiple beach access points on the far west end of Galveston Island were affected.

The Galveston Police Department said the following access points were closed on Friday:

  • #33 2nd St. / Bay Harbor
  • #34 Miramar
  • #35 Half Moon Beach
  • #36 Salt Cedar Avenue
  • #37 Playa San Luis
  • #38 Pointe San Luis
  • #39 Pointe San Luis 2
  • #40 Ponte San Luis 3
  • #41 Pointe San Luis 4

The access points have since reopened.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said they along with other law enforcement agencies increased presence along the I-45 corridor and the beaches ahead of Senior Skip Day.

“While we want everyone to enjoy their time safely, we have received information that some individuals may be bringing illegal drugs and firearms into the area,” the sheriff’s office said. “Deputies and officers will be actively monitoring the IH-45 corridor and beach areas. Anyone found in possession of illegal narcotics, firearms where prohibited, or engaging in unlawful activity will be subject to law enforcement action, including arrest. Parents are encouraged to speak with their kids about making responsible decisions and understanding the consequences of illegal activity.”

Enforcement operations outside Buc-ee's in Texas City (KPRC 2)

Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen said 25 deputies were stationed at the Buc-ee’s location in Texas City starting this morning at 9 a.m. So far, deputies have made:

  • 45 arrests on a variety of charges
  • 10 guns recovered, two were stolen
  • Assortment of narcotics recovered
  • K-9 used six times for drugs

The Galveston Police Department said their officers processed 17 arrests Friday:

  • 2 - possessions of controlled substance PG1
  • 1 - resisting arrest and possession of marijuana
  • 1 - interfering with police
  • 1 - DUI minor
  • 8 - for prohibited weapons

Four of the arrests were conducted by non-GPD law enforcement assisting, i.e. DPS, Texas Parks and Wildlife and Constable Precinct 1.

  • 1 – reckless driving
  • 1 – Possession of marijuana (POM)/Unlawful carrying of firearm (UCW)
  • 1 – minor in possession
  • 1 – warrant arrest
