It happened around 8:20 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of the South Freeway and Holly Hall.
Sgt. David Rose with HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division said they received reports from a witness that he saw the man walking on the shoulder of the main lanes of the highway. The witness tried to call police, but saw the man enter the southbound lanes of the highway. He was then struck by a vehicle and thrown into another lane where he was hit by a Toyota Tundra. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The original vehicle that hit the man fled the scene and police don’t have a description of that vehicle. The Toyota that struck the man stopped. The family inside suffered injuries, some significant, but none were transported to a hospital.
Rose said if the driver of the first vehicle is found, they will be charged with failure to stop and render aid.
Rose said they were able to identify the man that was killed and are reaching out to his next of kin. Police aren’t sure why he entered the main lanes of the highway as Rose says he doesn’t believe the man was intoxicated. Rose did say the man was older and dementia could have played a role. He also says the man was not from Houston.
