BAYTOWN, Texas – A new state charge was filed in the Houston-area’s first federal AI child exploitation case.

Kane James Kellum, 34, of Nacogdoches is accused of using artificial intelligence to generate images of child pornography of minors that he knew.

Kellum was arrested by Baytown police in November of 2025 and charged with possession of child pornography, also known as child sex abuse material (CSAM).

The case was handed over to the FBI, leading to federal prosecution and grand jury indictments on four counts related to CSAM.

On Wednesday, Baytown police said they uncovered “additional criminal conduct” that has led to Kellum facing a new charge filed with the state: Super Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child.

Baytown police say digital forensics played a key factor. Investigators say they were able to identify the origin, manipulation and storage of the illicit material.

“Crimes against children are among the most disturbing and serious offenses we investigate. This case demonstrates our department’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Baytown Police Chief John Stringer.

“As technology evolves, so do the tactics of those who seek to exploit it. We will continue to adapt, work alongside our federal partners, and utilize every available resource, including advanced digital forensics, to ensure offenders are held accountable.”

The use of artificial intelligence to exploit or manipulate images of minors is a serious crime with devastating and long-lasting impacts. Parents and guardians are encouraged to maintain open communication with their children about online safety, regularly monitor digital activity, and report suspected exploitation immediately. If you suspect a child is being exploited, contact your local law enforcement agency.
