Police said a guest at the Suburban Studios on the North Freeway noticed smoke coming from a room at about midnight and knocked on the door.

The man answered, allegedly showed a gun and shut the door, according to police.
The smoke set off the sprinkler system inside the hotel.
Hotel staff called 911 and they said he refused to come out to officers.
“Patrol officers spent a little bit of time trying to call him out, trying to see if we could get him to come out to check on him,” said Captain Kenneth Campbell with the Houston Police Department Tactical Operations.
HPD’s SWAT team was called to the scene.
The man surrendered at about 5 a.m.
“Our negotiators were able to get him to come out peacefully, no further incident occurred,” said Campbell.
Guests were evacuated during the standoff but were allowed back inside their rooms once the man was taken into custody.
“The hotel staff is in the process of cleaning up the hotel and vacuuming up a lot of water,” he said.
The man was taken to the hospital.
It was unclear what charges he would face.
