HOUSTON – For some Houston families facing financial hardship, keeping a beloved pet can come with difficult choices. Local animal welfare organizations hope a free pet food pantry later this month will help prevent those decisions.
Best Friends Animal Society in Houston is partnering with the Houston Humane Society and Houston City Council Member Mario Castillo to host a drive-thru Pet Food Pantry on Wednesday, Feb. 25, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Bella Vista Missionary Baptist Church.

The event will provide free cat and dog food to Houston-area residents in need on a first-come, first-served basis.
Organizers say demand for pet food assistance continues to grow as more families face economic challenges.
“With many families in Houston and surrounding areas experiencing food insecurity, relinquishing family pets can unfortunately become part of difficult financial decisions,” said Sarah Muirhead, senior lifesaving manager at Best Friends Pet Lifesaving Center in Houston. “A food donation could help a fellow Houstonian avoid the heartbreaking decision to surrender a beloved pet due to temporary hardship.”
Pet food insecurity is closely tied to broader financial strain, organizers said, as rising pet food costs add pressure to already tight household budgets.
“Pets are family and when their family struggles, they do too,” Muirhead said. “This pet food pantry event will help provide essential support to pet owners facing economic challenges, ensuring the well-being of their pets and helping keep families together.”
Community members are encouraged to donate new, unopened cat and dog food ahead of the event. Donations can be made through Best Friends’ Amazon Wish List or dropped off at the Best Friends Pet Lifesaving Center, 901 Pinemont Drive, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Monday, Feb. 24. All donations will go directly toward the Feb. 25 distribution.
Previous pet food distributions across Houston have drawn large crowds, and organizers say supplies can run out quickly without sufficient donations.
