Capital murder charge filed for suspect accused in Spring man’s shooting

Suspect already faces a separate capital murder charge for allegedly shooting a teenager last December

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – Authorities have charged a man with capital murder for the shooting death of Rashad Gumbs, 31, last December.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Ben Jerry Gage Jr., 26.

Deputies said Gage Jr. allegedly robbed and shot Gumbs in Spring on Dec. 6, 2025, in a residential area around Spring Dusk Lane.

Gumbs died in the hospital a few days later.

Gage Jr. was arrested on Dec. 15, 2025, in a separate case involving a teen who was found in a ditch with multiple gunshot wounds. He faces a capital murder charge in that case, too.

He is currently in custody at the Harris County Jail.
