Houston Police Lt. Larry Crowson said the call came in around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night. He said two drivers got into a minor accident on the freeway and pulled over to the shoulder to exchange information.
During this exchange, the man stepped out into moving traffic and was struck by a vehicle. He was killed on scene.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the location until law enforcement arrived and showed no signs of intoxication.
Police said they do not know if the man intentionally walked into traffic or was confused about where he was going.
“When you have a wreck on the freeway, get off the freeway just as soon as possible. Pulling over to the shoulder is safer than staying in a traffic lane, but being on these freeways - especially at night - is just so dangerous. Make contact with the other driver, agree to go to the next exit, and exchange information or wait for the police there,” Lt. Crowson said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
