Suspect killed, 2 injured after AutoZone burglary and crash along Katy Freeway

3 westbound lanes on Katy Freeway at Gessner shut down

HOUSTON – A burglary suspect is dead following a crash along the Katy Freeway Tuesday morning, according to Houston police.

Police say the crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. near Witte Road and involved a maroon sedan carrying three people. Investigators say the suspects had just burglarized an AutoZone on Gessner Road, where they stole several car batteries before leaving the scene.

HPD says the vehicle traveled south on Witte Road before crashing into a wall along the Katy Freeway feeder road. All three people inside the car were trapped, and Houston Fire Department crews had to extricate them from the vehicle.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other occupants were taken to the hospital with injuries.

Police said this was not a car chase. Officers say they were searching for the suspect vehicle when they came across the crash and later found the stolen car batteries inside the car.
