If you feel like you’re paying an arm and a leg to insure your car in Texas, data indicates that you’re not alone!
According to a new study from Insurify, Texans shopping for a new vehicle are facing higher insurance costs than much of the country. This is especially frustrating for people in Houston, many of whom commute to work every day living in a notoriously non-walkable city.

The data they examined looked at full-coverage insurance rates for 2024 and 2025 model vehicles. The study found the average American pays about $2,823 per year for full-coverage insurance on newer vehicles.
In Texas, that number climbs to $2,888 annually, placing the Lone Star State 15th most expensive in the nation for insuring current-model vehicles.
As inflation and tariffs continue to drive up the overall cost of buying and owning a car, insurance premiums remain a key factor for drivers across Houston and the rest of Texas—especially those in the market for a new vehicle.
Despite the higher statewide average, the study highlights several 2024 and 2025 models that are among the least expensive to insure in Texas.
The data seems to indicate that driving a van, an SUV or a crossover vehicle is the way to go if you want cheaper car insurance.
The 10 cheapest vehicles to insure in Texas, according to Insurify:
- Ford Transit — $1,857
- Lincoln Navigator — $1,903
- Cadillac Vistiq — $2,097
- Subaru Legacy — $2,123
- Chevrolet Traverse Limited — $2,145
- Subaru Outback — $2,159
- Honda Passport — $2,195
- Subaru Crosstrek — $2,206
- Jeep Grand Wagoneer — $2,214
- Nissan Murano — $2,219
This list suggests that size, safety features and repair costs are playing a role in keeping insurance premiums lower for Texans.
With new car prices continuing to rise, insurance costs are becoming an increasingly important part of the buying decision for Texas drivers.
The study suggests that choosing a model with lower insurance premiums could help offset some of the financial pressure tied to purchasing a new vehicle in today’s market.
Insurify says additional data and expert commentary are available for consumers looking to better understand how vehicle choice impacts insurance costs.
