HOUSTON â More than 200 private schools in the Houston area have been approved to participate in the Texas voucher program.

The initiative represents a $1 billion investment and is expected to assist about 92,000 families over a two-year period.
Decisions on approved applications will be announced by May 1, with funds distributed beginning July 1.

The program, often referred to as âschool vouchersâ, will allow parents to use state funds for private school tuition, tutoring, or homeschool expenses starting in the 2026â2027 school year.
According to tutoring group General Academic, the average annual private school tuition is approximately $27,000.
The Texas Education Freedom Accounts will prioritize low-income families and are projected to serve around 100,000 students statewide.
Families could receive:
- Up to $10,500 per year for private school students
- Up to $30,000 per year for students with disabilities
- Up to $2,000 per year for homeschool students
Funds will be deposited into digital wallets that families can use to pay for approved educational expenses.
The program will be managed by Odyssey, a technology company partnering with the Texas Comptrollerâs Office to develop the system families will use to apply for and manage funds.
