Law enforcement agencies across Harris and Montgomery counties are increasing patrols and coordination ahead of New Year’s Eve to address drunk driving and reduce deadly crashes.
Officials say the holiday is one of the busiest times of the year on local roadways.
In Harris County, Constable Mark Herman’s Office is leading a multi-agency effort that includes the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Houston Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and several local departments.
According to Precinct 4, more than 1,000 arrests for drunk driving have already been made this year, including cases involving repeat offenders.
What changes for New Year’s Eve
Officials say extra resources will be in place to keep deputies on the road and move cases quickly. Those include:
- Judges available to review blood warrant requests
- Medical staff on site to conduct blood draws
- Prosecutors ready to accept charges
The goal, officials say, is to quickly remove drunk drivers from the road during one of the busiest travel nights of the year.
Montgomery County also increasing enforcement
The Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office says a holiday task force will increase enforcement through the start of the new year. Officials say the focus is on identifying and removing drunk drivers and holding them accountable.
Commissioner Tom Ramsey said more than 500 people died on Harris County roads last year.
“Many of those deaths were preventable,” Ramsey said. “Many were tied to drunk driving. Harris County also has more roads than any other county in the country.”
Law enforcement leaders across both counties are urging people to plan ahead if they plan to drink, use a rideshare, or choose a sober driver to get home safely.
