Man dies days after Christmas eve hit-and-run in southeast Houston, police seek help

HOUSTON – The Buruca family is devastated after losing Erick, 43, who died several days after a hit-and-run on Christmas Eve.

Loved one told KPRC 2 he was struck just a block from his apartment near the intersection of Gulf Creek and South Loop East while running a quick errand, one he never returned from.

Marvin Buruca, Erick’s younger brother, flew in from Reno to be with the family during this difficult time.

“As soon as they told me about it, I took a flight the next day because I knew my mother needed me,” Marvin said.

When asked about seeing each other, Marvin described it as a mix of relief, frustration and sadness.

“He was a good man whose main priority was taking care of our mother,” Marvin said.

Their mother has been struggling but trying to stay strong.

“She’s trying to be as hard as she can, but we’ve had moments where she’s broken down. I have to be strong so she doesn’t see me break down,” Marvin said.

Buruca passed away on Dec. 27, three days after the crash.

Police say the incident happened between 6:15 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The suspect vehicle is described only as a silver vehicle. Authorities have few leads and are asking for the public’s help.

“If anybody has any information about what happened or who is responsible, please let us know,” Marvin said. “We want to know who caused this so we can find some closure.”

The family says Christmas will never be the same without Erick. Amid their grief, there is hope though, Erick was an organ donor, and his gift will help others live.

Houston police are asking anyone with information to call them or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
