Around 4:35 p.m. Tuesday, HPD officers responded to the fatal crash on 3500 Corder Street after an alleged car chase between a man and a woman. Police learned the chase stemmed from an argument between the two.

According to HPD, the man was driving a white Chevrolet sedan and the woman was driving a gold Toyota Sedan.

When they reached Corder Street, HPD said the man ran a stop sign, lost control and struck a female bystander, 43, who was standing by her car. The crash pinned her between both vehicles.

Police said an unrelated 12-year-old child was inside the bystander’s car at the time of the crash. The bystander’s family ran outside their house to apply first aid.

When emergency responders arrived, paramedics took the bystander to a hospital where she later died from her injuries.

HPD Lt. Larry Crowson initially said the man showed signs of intoxication, prompting an investigation from DWI investigators and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

“Obviously he was driving at a high-rate of speed down a residential street, so he could be charged with manslaughter, negligent homicide or something like that depending on what the DA comes up with, even if he’s not intoxicated,” Crowson said on Tuesday.

Officers took the man into custody, but in a press release on Friday, HPD said they released the man with no charges filed at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation.
