HOUSTON – With recent attacks still fresh in people’s minds, many are wondering what to do if they encounter an aggressive dog, and how to recognize warning signs before it’s too late.
KPRC 2 spoke with Justin Bailey, owner of Off Leash K9 Training, who shared expert advice on staying safe and handling aggressive dogs.
Bailey says there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, but there are important things you should never do.
“The number one thing you should not do is run,” Bailey said. “Don’t run and never turn your back on an aggressive dog.”
Running can make you appear as prey and trigger a chase response, he explained.
If you see a dog approaching aggressively, Bailey advises stopping and turning your body to the side. Avoid direct eye contact but keep the dog in your peripheral vision. Do not turn your back or run.
Being proactive can also help. Carrying safety tools like mace or keys can provide protection if a dog charges. Bailey suggests aiming for the dog’s eyes if you need to defend yourself.
He also recommends using clothing to protect yourself. “If you have a jacket or hoodie, take it off and wrap it around your arm,” Bailey said. “Let the dog bite the jacket, not your face, throat, or legs.”
Bailey emphasizes that aggressive behavior in dogs often stems from their environment. It’s the owner’s responsibility to socialize their pets and watch for signs of aggression.
“If we don’t take dogs out to experience the world, train them, and expose them to other dogs and people, they lose socialization and their ability to adapt,” he said. “They become pack animals that withdraw and can become aggressive.”
Recognizing warning signs early and knowing how to respond can make all the difference in preventing dog attacks.
