HOUSTON – Two men were killed during an home invasion at an apartment complex near River Oaks after the resident fired several shots at them, according to the Houston Police Department.
Police initially responded to a burglary in progress around 10:45 a.m. at The Gael Apartments. Investigators are now calling this a deadly home invasion.
Police said when they entered the apartment, they found a man dead and another still alive but injured, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
The injured man was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.
KPRC 2’s Bryce Newberry spoke with an eyewitness at the scene who said he heard three gunshots and looked outside of his apartment to see masked men, in all black, running to a Mercedes getaway car.
“I was shook,” witness Sebastian Lam said. “That kind of stuff doesn’t happen here. So, seeing a shooting and a few guys running, we were shook, so we called the cops because we didn’t know what to do.”
Investigators learned that three men used a large piece of concrete to break the door down. Once inside, the man, who loved in the apartment, said he was alone at the time of the break-in and had been tied up by the suspects. He said he was able to free himself and opened fire on two of them with a handgun of his own, according to HPD.
The third suspect ran away and got into the getaway car. He is still on the run.
Investigators also found a large amount of marijuana and THC inside the apartment. This incident appears to be targeted for a narcotics rip, police said.
Narcotics-related charges have been filed on two men.
After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office it was determined the shooting would be referred to a Harris County Grand Jury.
