The Texas Department of Transportation is urging drivers to choose a sober ride as the summer winds down, warning that one bad decision can lead to lifelong consequences.
From Aug. 15 through Sept. 1, law enforcement across Texas will increase patrols to stop drunk drivers. TxDOT says every 23 minutes, a crash in the state involves an impaired driver, more than 60 a day.
In summer 2024, DUI-related crashes killed 273 people and seriously injured 596. Over Labor Day weekend alone, there were 327 such crashes, leading to 10 deaths and 36 serious injuries.
“Even when you are celebrating Labor Day, it’s important to do so responsibly and choose a sober ride so we can all get home safely,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams.
The “Drive Sober. No Regrets” campaign encourages Texans to call a ride, use public transit or designate a sober driver.
