Barbara Quattro, a driving force behind beautification and civic projects in Alief for more than four decades, has died, Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones announced Tuesday.

“I am very sad that today we lost Barbara Quattro, a pillar of the Alief community and a fierce environmental advocate for more than 40 years,” Briones said in a statement. “Barbara shaped transformational projects such as the Alief Community Center, the Alief Forest Trail, and the NeighborWoods program, which has helped plant over 10,000 trees.”

Quattro’s volunteer work began soon after she moved to Houston from Alaska in the early 1980s. Through NeighborWoods and other sponsorships, she helped plant and water thousands of trees in local parks and esplanades. She organized community cleanups, voter registration drives, and improvements through the Alief Super Neighborhood Council, where she served as chair.

She led efforts to maintain the Alief Nature Center garden, coordinated large-scale volunteer projects, and worked on events that brought residents together. In 2013, she joined K-9 Angels, fostering more than 130 dogs and helping launch The Empty Shelter Project, which has provided thousands of free spay, neuter, and vaccination services in underserved areas.

Quattro also served on her homeowners association board and was a trusted resource for connecting residents with opportunities to improve their neighborhood.

“Harris County and Alief are greener, stronger, and more united because of Barbara,” Briones said. “May she rest in peace and power.”
