Missouri City gym honors teen killed in road rage shooting

MISSOURI CITY, Texas – Nearly a year after Cody Johnson was tragically killed in a road rage shooting, family and friends gathered to honor on what would have been his 20th birthday. The Missouri City gym where Cody trained, Alphaland, unveiled a new bench dedicated in his name.

The large turnout at the gym reflected what his family calls the “Cody effect,” a testament to the impact he made in his short life.

“He made such an impact that they made him a part of Alphaland,” said Michael Johnson, Cody’s father. The bench is placed in front of the spot where Cody once deadlifted over 500 pounds.”

Cody’s mother, Amy Juneau, shared her hope that people continue to remember and honor her son. “If he can’t be here with us, then I want people to remember him. I want to say his name. He deserves that.”

Cody was killed on September 27, 2024, near the Katy Freeway service road close to the Grand Parkway. Harris County sheriff’s deputies said he was found outside his black Chevy Camaro with gold rims, unresponsive from gunshot wounds. He was on his way to pick up his girlfriend after leaving a family member’s home.

Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in the case.

“We still don’t have any leads on who killed him that night,” Amy said. “We’re still asking for the public’s help.”

For Cody’s parents, the gym was more than a place to work out — it was his happy place, filled with accomplishments and life lessons. Michael recalled a video of Cody deadlifting, highlighting his goofy sense of humor that brought smiles to everyone around him.

“I speak to him every day,” Amy said. “I would give anything to have him back with me. We’ll be together again one day.”

With the bench now centered in the gym, his parents are grateful that more people will see and remember Cody’s lasting legacy.

There is a $30,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
